Cozy in the snow with fleece coat & snood

Well, here in Sweden the snow's been falling for some time now, and the cold weather is calling for some fashionable and warming coats for dogs with short fur.

I wanted to show you just how nice and cozy it looks when Sabah's got both the coat and the matching snood on! I'm a little surprised at how comfortable he is with his ears tucked away like this - perhaps not all dogs are this calm about their outer wear?

This snood's is split down by the neck, which keeps it out of the way for the leash, and makes it come down a bit further so as to cover as much as possible.

Report from the sofa, and the girl behind the sewing machine

So it's been another day in the sofa - but not watching dvd series this time, I've actually been working!

Where I spent my day.

Yeah, it's true. I awoke around six this morning, and got inspired to finish my Ninda ♥ Dogs site, since I just finished two coats for Sabah and I always get so inspired when I've been taking photos with him and his owner, Barbara.

A while ago, I was considering not doing any more dog things, since it took so much focus from my main business with the purses. But recently, my work situation changed and I've had to consider all ways of getting an income. And since designing and sewing is what I really want to be doing, it would be crazy to turn down what does seem to be like a lucrative business opportunity. While Sabahs owner might be one of a kind for getting so many coats done for her dog, some surfing on the internet quickly shows that that doesn't seem to be the case.

Anyway, business topics aside, when I get something into my head, it's hard to get out. And when I start with one thing, I quickly move on to changing everything! I got the dog site done, and then I set to work touching up my Swedish site and my Swedish blog, and finally finishing with this site that has been left stranded for quite some time. Now they all look quite alike, which I think is good. It should feel like your moving about the same page when you go from one to the other.

I've removed most of what I tried to do with ordering custom bags and covers online without the conversation bit. I came to realize that it's just easier emailing, when someone has a special order. So, it's cleaner, all shopping is moved to Etsy (why try and keep a web shop AND Etsy going at the same time, when they can be linked?) and I think I'll start blogging more regularly. Both with Ninda stuff and some personal stuff, so you can get to know me a bit!

Here's the short facts about me:

I'm 29 (hanging onto a thread to the twenties...)
I still haven't taken the plunge to go all-out with my business, but it's my dream
I'm divorced
I live in Sweden, in Umeå (north) for now, but haven't really decided where I'm gonna be when I turn 30
A year ago, I was newly wed, living in New York City (Manhattan no less) thinking life was going to turn out one way, but it turned out another
I wouldn't describe myself as a dog person, but I've enjoyed making coats for dogs
I love vintage (but you could figure that one out with your toe nail!)
Speaking of toe nails, mine are painted red
I love shrimp (but the nordic sea kind, not the large one's you usually get in the states)
If I'm allowed, I eat sauce with a spoon, the way the French intended it to be eaten... ;)

Heh, there's more of course, I could go on all night. If there's more fun stuff you'd like me to share, just blurt it out and I'll try to answer :)

International and local, all in one go...

It's amazing really, this internet thing. This weekend, I was selling at a local market. One of my customers was an australian woman, who happens to live in the village next to mine. She fell in love with the shape of my bag, and was surprised to do so - normally she doesn't look at bags, she said.

Yesterday, I got a sale on Etsy. My second one, so I'm still all tingly when it happens. I got a custom order for an iPad cover, to send to the UK. My first sale on Etsy was just two weeks ago, another iPad item, a bag this time, caught the eye of a Texan.

So is this how it beings, when you take over the world? You move from New York to a small village in Sweden, and then it all begins to unfold. A couple of bags in this village, and a handful of bags in other corners of the world. Soon, I will be everywhere! I'll certainly keep track of every new country that I'm invading, every so delicatley. Before you know it...

This combination of fabric has proven to be a popular one. All new bags sold at the market, and the iPad bag that I sold was this combo as well. It's a very elegant fabric that I bought at the Hell's Kitchen flea market in New York, the seller said it was from the 40's. I still have some left, if you feel a similar craving...

So, I didn't sell ANYTHING at the Design market last weekend...

That should perhaps make me very sad. Make me feel like what I do isn't worth it. But somehow, it isn't.It was the first market in a while, a year perhaps. It was bound to be a trial run. And the market itself, wasn't quite right for me, mostly teenagers at their first market.

No, what I feel is more like inspiration to do better next time! A big phew! that it wasn't expensive, and just: inspiration to make the next one the best one yet. I know I need to do better on a couple of things.

First off, my stuff wasn't really put together that well. One of this and one of that and in the end everything just melted together. I also need to let some air in on the table - if I'm gonna use a table next time, I have some creative ideas! - and not put EVERYTHING on it, just because I'm so glad that I finished all of them in time. I need to think more minimalistic and designer chic rather than flea market "put it where it fits, and if it doesn't fit, put it on top".

But the next market is only two weeks away! Eeek! How will I have time to put together my new ideas? I don't know, so we'll see how it goes...

And one more good thing about not selling at the market, is that I get to put up all the new stuff in the Etsy store! This isn't all of them, so go check it out!

Ninda on Etsy

I'm thinking about ending the experiment of trying to have my own web shop here. I might just continue blogging, and put it all up on Etsy, instead of here. It sort of doesn't make sense anymore, when I can so easily link to Etsy, and I spend all that time putting in information about the things I sell. It's just easier with Etsy, I guess. The Swedish shop will still be open, but this English one, since I'm back in Sweden now - it's just too hard to manage both AND Etsy. What do you think? Do you have your own shop, or would if you were selling?

Between getting a new apartment, cleaning it (yeah, he who moved out hadn't cleaned it, blah!), getting it furnished, starting a new job and well... dealing with some personal stuff, there hasn't been a lot of work done latley... And perhaps that's no wonder.

But here's a pouch (or necessity bag as we call it in Sweden) that I made to match a bag my aunt bought in a store in Gothenburg where I sell my stuff (Butik Kubik - link in Swedish but there's pretty pictures!). She thought it a bit too big, her stuff kept drowning in it! So to end the accessory murder going on, I made this, that can also be used as a hand bag or wristlet.

Ninda has moved back to Sweden

So this is the outpost Ninda is moving to... No, I'm just kidding! But it's not far, perhaps a mile from here, Ninda is settling down. Our time in New York has been fun indeed, and I have learned a lot from living there, but now I'm going back to my home town. But don't worry, I will still blog, and I will still make bags and sell them to you!

The website will be going through some changes in the near future, and some things might not be updated correctly, I hope you can bear with me on that.

This weeks Etsy favorites were created round the theme of lace. I'm a big fan of lace of all colors, but I found almost everything that I came upon on Etsy was white or creme colored, so I collected the best pieces into this collage. I'll have to do a colored lace theme sometime in the future!

However, the whites goes well with the hopes of spring, does it not? Today it's raining in New York, but last week we had lovley weather, I do hope it will come back!

Ok, so I know it's vital not to get hair on your merchandise, in case of allergic customers and all. But sometimes it's hard to resist a beautiful model!

This cute little thing is my mothers cat Ziggy, and he really wanted to be in the spotlight when I took photos of my new spring bags (intended for a store in Stockholm). And really, it's not photoshop: he's got one blue and one yellow eye!

At the moment, I'm sulking. On coming back from my trip to Sweden, with quite a few custom orders waiting to get done, I find that my sewing machine is breaking down. There's something wrong with the timing, and it doesn't stitch. This morning me and my husband took it apart and tried to fix it - and of course a scew escapes! We searched the floor meticulously, but still couldn't find it. So, no fixing it on our own then. I guess I have to carry it down to Gizmo tomorrow to get it fixed, but I'm really hoping he can find it in his heart to maybe come up here to fix it, since it's attached to a table and can't stand on its own! Yeah, I got a really old one... Well well, now you know why there haven't been any new action!

For customers concerned about pet hair in my products, you needen't worry! I don't have pets on my own, this was a one time thing and all my bags and cases are hair free!

It's my beautiful friend Miriams birthday today!

Yesterday, I made her this lovley blue jewelry pouch with soft green flowered lining and details. I hope you'll find a use for it, Miriam!

The pouch has a bottom with heavy interfacing, I use left over rubber floor mats for the bottom pieces too give them a bit of heavyness and make them stand straight. The outer fabric is a thrifted one from a charity shop, gorgeous blue wool. The lining and detail fabric comes from my mothers fabric bin, it was meant to be a pair of trousers at one point, but never made it that far.

It's about 25 cm in height, and measures 60 cm in diameter when fully open, 40 cm at the bottom.

Made some very functional zipper pouches in various sizes to match these bags I made for Orkan Lia. I didn't have the red fabrics with me, so I'll have to make them when I get home (which is on wednesday!).

What do you think? Isn't it just perfect for just most neccessary items, that you want to find quick in your bag?

In Sweden, we call them neccessity bags (freely translated). I think it's a great word for it, don't you?

Or does it bring something else to mind? It's hard when english isn't your first language, so you'll have to help me out here, my american friends!

Did the finishing touches on these six new bags today, all of whom are travelling to Stockholm to find true love in the new shop of Orkanlia and Cissi&Selma, two wonderful shops that have come together for the greater good (at least that how I see it). Blog post: something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue

Something old: well, that would be the red and blue fabric, that I picked up in New York in May. It would also stand for the old sewing machine that you see in the background, an old Riccar that is at least as old as I am, and unfortunatley just as clumsy.

Something new: the blue base fabric is a new heavy weight, linen like upholstery that is great for making bags! I will probably have to buy a new batch, if there's anything left (and I can remember where I bought it). The other sewing machine you see in the background is also new. It's a Husquarna - what else? I'm in Sweden! I borrowed it from my sister since the old Riccar is refusing to make a steady zigzag. Unfortunatley the power cord didn't make it to the party, that's why I'm still struggling with the Riccar!

Something borrowed: the sewing machines, as you have already noticed, and the table and the ironing board and well, the space. I am not in my regular studio! I'm in Sweden visiting my family, but I couldn't really leave the work behind...

Something blue: The fabric of course! And the snow, in twilight and shadow. Gosh the snow is so beautiful! My mood might be a bit blue too, and my iron definately is.

So here it is, my newbie knitting project! It doesn't look much yet, but it will, hopefully, become a nice and cozy shawl to keep me warm now that the snow is upon us here in New York again.

Tonight I'm going to my first ever knitting café meetup. I had to start the project before I went, so I didn't look too stupid sitting there with the simplest ever shawl instructions, not understanding anything!

But now it's time to get into the studio again, where I'm making something red and yellow... A little more on the spring side of life.

Today, I went to the Etsy lab craft night for the first time, and I loved it! Though making Valentine's ornaments may not exactly be my thing, it was fun crafting with others. I'll be back for sure.

The heart I made, I'll not show you until the person I'm giving it to has recieved it. I think it would kind of spoil the fun if she saw it here... :)

Today's "tutor" was Dari Lithman of Papi's Mami. I kind of want to steal her heat press, I just loved how great the image transfers came out. It's getting me some ideas for future bag projects...

Custom design: A bag with many pockets + extra pouch

A birthday present, given one year, decided upon and finished a year later, almost on the date!

Sofia Hageus from Gothenburg, Sweden, recieved a gift certificate for her birthday. She wanted a bag with and adjustable strap and many pockets, plus an extra pouch besides, and what the birthday girl wants, the birthday girl gets!

I think maybe the pictures will tell most, so here they are, with a few comments.

It's so great to be back in the saddle creating custom designs again! This one is a late birthday gift (not given late, but executed late due to various circumstances) where Sofia got to choose exactly what model, fabric and features she wanted. What that amounted to, I'll show you soon!

So this is where I tell you why my new blue bags are also old...
It's like this.

Sometimes you stray from your path. Sometimes, you set out to do something, and then something else comes along, and you forget what you started.

Or you put it in a box, for next weeks assignment. Or you put it in a box, and forget to look.

Some weeks pass, you look in the box and say - oh yeah, these bags that are cut and ready - but...

But they don't figure into what you're doing at the moment, you're all into brown winter bags by now and these are bright and blue spring bags. So, they go into the box again.

Before you know it, two years or more have passed, and you're packing your bags for the big move to New York. And there they are, in the little box titled "to finish". And you don't have the heart to leave the poor buggers behind - you take them with you and finish them in the new land!

Long story for a short reference, but there you go. These blue babies where supposed to be a part of a blue collection of four, and I made the smaller versions and have sold them both.

Now I'm hoping someone here will fall in love with these bright blue promises of spring!

As for the laptop covers, it feels really good to finally have some new ones for sale in the shop. I made them as diverse as I could, with different kinds och fabrics and different styles, so you can see what I can do.

These are measured to fit the Macbook 13" (12,78 x 8,94 x 0,94 inches) but as you know, I can make any sort of cover for any sort of computer - except maybe desk tops, but hey, I don't think that's such a bad idea after all, they could use some sort of dust covers when not in use... Just let me know the measurements of your computer, pick your fabric and style and where a go!

Since coming home from Christmas "vacation" back in Sweden, my goal has been to start fill up the web shop here, and my first efforts are finally done. Three lovley bags are the result, all different styles and different fabrics.

The binder bag features a fabric that I'm totally in love with, it has so many different flowers in so many different shapes and colors, that it makes me all bubbly inside. The fabric has been used for the flap, lining and pockets, and the base fabric is a brown wool with dots of red and blue in it. The binder bag (awful name, I know, help me think of better ones! - I might just announce a naming contest to find the right name for the bags, I can't seem to do it on my own...) fits, as the name suggests, binders (up to two if they're not overfilled), but is of course functional for it's size and shape for other things as well.

I've made the messenger bag in two sizes. The large one for those who carry a lot of stuff with them, or plan to do a lot shopping... It's perfect if you need to bring an extra sweater, or fill it up with books. The big messenger bag here features a lovley swirly black base fabric with a psychadelic yellow patterned flap and pockets. The small messenger bag is done in a brown herring bone base fabric, with a brown rose patterned fabric for the flap and pockets, and is just the right size to fit what you need and still be roomy enough for that book/sweater/insert preffered shopping item here you found on your way home.

All bags have a cellphone/MetroCard pocket on the back side, and a larger pocket inside for the smaller stuff you carry with you, be it a digital camera, Nintendo or PSP, keys, wallet or what have you. The pockets are closed with velcro.

Designing bags, covers and cases for various synthesizers and musical equipment is something I really love to do. It just feels right, giving them a right size bag that will protect them as well as make them easy to carry with you. And it's so hard to find bags that fit for certain types of products, products that you generally are very fond of and do not want to cram in with everything else in a bigger bag. Hence my passion: I get to create something that is missing, and I get a customer that is overjoyed to have a problem solved.

Blog post: six new unique bags headed for Sweden

I just finished the project I've been working on the past two weeks - a group of bags to bring back to Sweden. There are a good amount of fabrics that I've been eager to use, but somehow never got around to, perhaps because I love them so much it's hard to actually cut it up! It's so fun to see the the finished product now though, and if it weren't for the fact that I can only use so many bags, I would be glad to keep them all.

I've tested a new style this time, with the small messenger bags. I've been using a large one for some time now, and though they are marvellous when it comes to fitting everything you need to bring with you (or everthing you shop...), it's sometimes nice to have a smaller bag, that you won't as easily bump into people with when you've filled it to it's maximum. I think it looks very nice, and though I haven't tried using the smaller size bag, I think you'll find it both useful and beautiful.

The fabrics I've used for these bags are almost all used up now, but there is at least enough to make one more bag out of each, so if you've fallen in love with one of them, and don't happen to live in Sweden, were these will end up, feel free to email me about the one you'd like. The prices are around $85 for the smallest one, $95 for the binder bag and 105$ for the big messenger bag (+ standard rate shipping, I haven't checked but it shouldn't be so much if you live in the states).

These beauties will be coming home to Sweden with me, where they will be for sale at Butik Kubik in Gothenburg. However, if you catch me before monday, I can allow one or two to find homes in USA as well. And don't worry, as soon as I get back from the holidays, I will start making more beautiful vintage fabrics bags that will be for sale here!

These are the fabrics I'm working with right now.

I've already finished three unique bags, two black and one brown, and these will all be photographed soon, hopefully tomorrow. They're gonna come with me to Sweden when I go "home" for the holidays.

This is my home now, though, ain't it? Except home towns are always home towns, and home countries are... well, they're home countries too, aren't they? It's kinda weird moving to another country. I hope the bags won't feel too weird, being of two nationalities as well, being born in one country and then moving to another... All the patterned fabrics (except the red one in the middle) are Swedish ones, and the "plain" ones were bought here.

But now I have to get back to sewing, so you can see the actual bags soon!

Cover with flap for various gadgets

This cover can be done for all sorts of gadgets, and lends a little more support than the simple drawstring style. If padding is wanted, it can be lined with quilted, padded lining or foam padding with fabric lining. The flap can be done in various styles, such as elephant trunk, assymetrical, envelope or square. It can be closed with velcro, buttons or magnetic snap.

If needed, a strap can be attached, so you can carry it around.

Blog post: A taste of things to come

This is one of the things I'm working on right now. Two other bags in the doing as well, one with orange flowers on black, and the other bright red flower on brown. I think you're gonna love it... ;)

It's been a while since I really worked in the studio, and I'm realizing it's not like riding a bicycle. Sewing, and most importantly planning a sewing project so that it doesn't take forever, is work that needs practice. More like playing the violin, than riding a bike. It takes longer now, then before The Big Move To The Apple, cause I had worked in a pattern, I had my routines in the workshop, and things went smoothly. I think it will soon start flowing here as well, I just have to let it take time I guess!

The Bust Craftacular has been on my wish list for things to do since I moved to New York City. Today I finally got the chance, and though it was a bit cold out and I didn't really feel like standing in a queue, I held out and it was definately worth it! So many lovely things, by so many talented people - I was happy and dazed, walking slowly through the tightly filled floors of the Metropoltian Pavilion taking care to look at everything.

I got a bunch of lovley christmas gifts, that I won't let you peek at, at least not until christmas is over. And I found this beautiful owl necklace for myself. I almost didn't buy it, thinking mostly of gifts and of a necklace I got last weekend at the Brooklyn Flea Market (post coming, I have to show you the wonderful piece). But I went back, and I got it, and I am so glad that I did. The bronce owl was sold by the Can't Afford Em Buttons collective, who's got an etsy store: Can't Afford Em Crafts

We (that being me and my husband) also found three beautiful prints to hang on our empty walls, and following in the track of feathered friends, we fell in love with these wonderfully decorated light switch covers. Finally something to brighten up our undecorated apartment! It seems we didn't get their card with our purchase though, so I can't tell you who made them :( If anyone knows, please tell me!
